About Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy helps people to learn new ways to deal with difficult situations, difficult emotions, difficult relationships, and stress that is a normal part of life.  I have been a psychotherapist for over 20 years.  I have helped many individuals improve their mental health, and many families to restore healthy relationships.

The biggest predictor of success in therapy is whether you feel like your therapist understands where you are coming from. I encourage you to contact me for a free 15-minute consult so that you can get a sense of whether I feel like a good match for you.

LGBTQ+ Affirming Psychotherapy

LGBTQ+ people deserve a therapist who understands the unique stressors experienced by gender and sexual minorities.  As a member of the LGBTQ+ community, I am committed to providing therapy that affirms your gender and sexuality, and is sensitive to the many intersecting issues that effect your life.

Because of experiences of oppression and minority stress, LGBTQ+ people experience depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and trauma at rates much higher than the general population.  Therapy should be a place where the last thing you have to explain is your identity.

I have particular interest and experience working with transgender and nonbinary people, and have been advocating for and working with trans people and families throughout my career. The 'T' in LGBTQ+ is not an afterthought to me.

Adolescents & Families

Adolescence is a time of rapid growth, change, and learning. The joys and the challenges are immense.  I can help teens struggling with the normal stress of adolescence, as well as other mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and eating disorders.  Many adolescents question their identity, whether it is about where they fit in socially, culturally, their gender, or their sexuality.  I have worked with many adolescents to better understand themselves and their place in the world.

Many families struggle during children's adolescence, and can benefit from a place to work through problems, improve their coping skills, and communicate more effectively.  I work with families to help them reduce conflict, solve problems, and have satisfying relationships with each other. If it is preferable or necessary, I can work with parents without their child present.

Eating Disorders

Struggles with eating and body image are some of the hardest mental health issues to treat.  Good intentions and supportive therapy are rarely enough.  I have worked with adults and adolescents with eating disorder for many years, including being the director of an eating disorders treatment center.

Successful recovery from an eating disorders requires a combination of psychotherapy, nutritional, and sometimes psychiatric intervention, as well as awareness of cultural pressures that contribute to problems with body image and eating. I can provide psychotherapy and help you find the rest of your multi-disciplinary team for recovery.

If you are struggling with eating or body image, I can help.  Psychotherapy utilizing techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy offer hope and recovery from eating disorders.

For adolescents with eating disorders, I provide family based-treatment (FBT), also known as Maudsley therapy.  Research has established this treatment as the most effective option for eating issues in adolescents.  It is even effective for adolescents who are ambivalent about treatment or don't want to give up disordered eating behaviors.

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)

Do you struggle with extreme emotions and difficulty managing them? Have you struggled with suicide, self-harm, substance abuse, disordered eating, or other behavior that puts your life and well-being at risk? I am experienced in providing Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a treatment that is designed to help people with these struggles learn to manage emotions, give up behaviors that are likely to harm them or shorten their lives, and build a life worth living.

DBT teaches coping skills to help people regulate emotions, resist impulsive behavior, and balance acceptance of life's problems with making changes needed to have a good life.  Even more important, DBT helps you learn how and when to use these coping skills so they become a regular part of your life.

Trauma Mood & Anxiety

Trauma, Mood, & Anxiety

Depression and anxiety are sometimes referred to as the "common cold" of mental illness; most people will experience one or both of them at some point in their lives.  Likewise, many individuals have experienced traumatic events in their life, whether in the form of accidents, abuse, or natural disasters.

You do not have to live with depression, anxiety, or the effects of past experiences. All of these difficulties are highly treatable with psychotherapy.  I work with people dealing with depression, anxiety, and trauma to help them better understand not just why they are experiencing these symptoms, but also how to manage them and reduce vulnerability to symptoms returning.
